NRL Reporter- Freelance

The Worldwide Leader in Sports is looking for a freelance NRL reporter to develop unique news lines, in video and written reports, that engage more deeply the users.


ESPN is the world’s leading sports entertainment company. In Australia and New Zealand, ESPN operates the ESPN, ESPN2 and WatchESPN subscription television sports channels. 

ESPN’s digital network is Australia’s number one destination for online sport, comprising the sites, ESPNcricinfo, ESPNFC, ESPNfootytips, ESPNscrum and espnW. ESPN also operates the X Games and ESPN Films franchises. 

The sports schedule across ESPN channels includes NFL (including the Super Bowl), NBA basketball, Major League Baseball, ATP tennis, FA Cup, RBS Six Nations Rugby Union, MLS, AMA Supercross, World Series of Poker, as well as NCAA American college football and basketball and Summer and Winter X Games.

Additionally, ESPN delivers high quality studio shows, “game around the game” coverage with shows such as SportsCenter, ESPNFC, Pardon The Interruption (PTI), NBA Tonight, NFL Live and SportsNation to name a few, all shows featuring both ex-players and experts in the field.


The successful applicant must be able to attract a new audience of passionate and knowledgeable Aussie rugby league fans with bespoke content published to our social channels.

Specific Responsibilities

As a NRL Reporter you will:
Produce original video, written and audio content for all ESPN digital platform
Work alongside the Managing Editor and Associate Editor (NRL) to develop engaging content that reflects our integrated editorial strategy
Submit ideas and suggestions regarding content as well as the site to the Associate Editor (NRL).

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, communications or a related field
Typically 3-5 years of content production – written and video — reporting and/or editing experience
Able to follow and shape stories at different stages of development using various means of presentation
Advanced news judgment, and understand sport from a journalistic point of view; good news judgment and strong editing skills are especially important, and applicants will be asked to sit a subbing test and also to write a news article
Excellent English grammar and organisational skills
Strong knowledge of social media and emerging technologies.
